Vicki Gunter

I research online and in the field. I sketch, make patterns, use slabs, coils, work solid and throw on the wheel. I love to paint with underglazes, glazes and often finish with beeswax. My recent work incorporates worked copper and brass into the ceramic sculptures representing the delicate tendrils of life: stems, stamen, pistils, DNA. All pieces are unique and sculpted by hand.

I create work within four series; they evolved in this order:

CANARY & ELEPHANT SERIES: what’s the next canary-int-the-coal-mine for our planet and what are the elephants-in-the-room. Every piece includes a yellow cautionary canary regarding ecological and social justice issues.

…IN EVERYTHING SERIES: California native flowers enlarged 7x, in clay. DNA is in everything; evidence of the shared ancestry of ALL living things. Each flower transforms into a DNA helix in unique ways.

My NEW ERA SERIES was initially inspired by the murder of George Floyd, whose family wore white to his funeral to say, 'this is not and ending but a new era!’. Salient elements from both previous series are incorporated.

Beginning 6/2024 I have begun BLOOM: A major ceramic project of 50 native California wildflowers all chosen by community. Acknowledging life blooming from death, the 50 flowers will surround a Soil Spirit and Blooming Spirit on a 10x14 foot wall. This project will take me 5 1/2 years and I hope will exhibit when I’m 80!
