Sculptures by these twenty-six PRS sculptors will be exhibited from April 23 through June 11, 2021 at Art Works Downtown, Marin County's premier non-profit art center, located on Fourth Street in downtown San Rafael, CA. The exhibition coincided with International Sculpture Day (Saturday April 24th) & will be both on-site & online. Receptions are planned for 5-8 PM on May 14 & June 11. Unfortunately, the pandemic prevented installation of the physical exhibition, which then became an extended virtual exhibition. However, a recent meeting of the PRS Exhibitions Committee, show curator, & Commonwealth Club leadership made post-pandemic plans.

The image above, taken in the beautiful rooftop garden of San Francisco's Commonwealth Club, includes (L-R) curator Robert Melton, Alex Hernandez (Commonwealth Club, back to camera), & PRS Exhibitions Committee members Jann Nunn, Marguerite Elliot, & Catherine Daley (not pictured, Charles Stinson), who made plans for the exhibition to be installed as a real-life exhibition welcoming back visitors to the Commonwealth Club -- a spectacular venue for sculpture exhibitions. RECENT SECOND SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT

KIM THOMAN

May 9, 2021

For May 9, 2021, the Event Spotlight was on Kim Thoman, who says, "The basis for my art is a belief that duality exists in everything. I am aware of the presence of opposing forces in the world around me such as intellect and intuition, male and female, stillness and movement,  body and soul, light and dark, organized and chaotic, and of course life and death."

Kim continues: "My artwork aims to bring the duality of contrasting energy forces into balance. My desire is to present opposite sides of any truth in order to see the real picture. In addition to the philosophical concerns in my work, natural elements emerge that are symbols for my own growth." 

     

Kim's recent works incorporate 3D color printed forms, often suspended, as in the image above. This curvilinear, feminine shape evolved from her drawings in sketchbooks (below). Using digital techniques, she "wraps" the form with a "skin" derived from her graphics and paintings.

Kim described technical details of the 3D color printing process, which uses colored medium to selectively fuse layers of powder, which is then stabilized by infusing with a liquid medium (below). 

The Events Committee plans to make available videos of this and other studio visits. Watch for announcements.

Barry Beach, "Accumulations & Excavations #3 (drawers)"

For June 13, 2021, the Events Committee will have a virtual visit to the studio of Barry Beach, who states, "I explore the intersection of the human and natural worlds - the 'human landscape' - through transforming materials. Deconstruction, reconstruction, accumulation, covering, coating, and exposing are part of my material transformation process. Recent work explores accumulation, topography, cycles of waste and renewal, and mark-making."

CHERYL COON

PRS member Cheryl Coon is the new curator for the Vargas Gallery at Mission College, Santa Clara, CA. Cheryl received BAs in Art & French from Humboldt State, and an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. She studied art history at the Université de Paris XIII, Panthéon-Sorbonne. She has held curatorial positions at the San Francisco Art Commission, curating exhibitions in SF City Hall, City Site, and the SFAC Gallery. She served as the Program Manager for the San Mateo County Art Commission’s ArtShare, curating exhibitions in the San Mateo County Government Center galleries. She was the Program Director for the Sanchez Art Center. She received fellowships for residencies at the Villa Montalvo Art Center, in Saratoga, the Vermont Studio Center, the Djerassi Resident Artist Program in Woodside, and the Pouch Cove Residency in Newfoundland, Canada. She taught courses in Museum and Gallery studies, most recently at DeAnza College, and published articles in Ceramics Art and Perception, Sculpture Review, Art Papers, and Neue Keramik - Die Keramikzeitschrift fur Europa. In 2021 she took over the curatorial position for the Mission College Vargas Gallery after PRS member Lynne Todaro retired.  

Cheryl's first exhibition for Mission College Vargas Gallery is #art #activism, featuring works by artists Jenny Balisle, Kristine Mays, Maria de Los Angeles (image below), Priscilla Otani, & Robin Bernstein. Cheryl says the artists in this exhibition "... observe contemporary events and use art, writing and social media to bring awareness to issues that they are passionate about." The Mission College Gallery continues to be closed to the public for the remainder of 2021, so this is a virtual exhibition, which you can view at this link.

RACHEL KARKLIN

Rachel Karklin “Awakening Masha", 2021, 16”H x 15”W x 12”D, resin & concrete

As the featured artist in the exhibition Without a Plan in the Spirit of the Material, Rachel Karklin will show works in several media at Kaleid Gallery in San Jose, CA. The show demonstrates how material itself affects the creative process of the artist and manifests itself in the final work of art. The exhibition continues through July 17. 2021.
