Kathleen king

Gearbox Gallery in Oakland, CA is pleased to present the special exhibition Lost In Things in the Inner Room by Kathleen King.

Lost in Things is a poem, a broken grid, a territory. As systems exploit and discard things as well as people, this installation asks the questions, “What are we made of, what connects us, what do we need?”

Kathleen King gathers detritus from city streets, natural objects collected over years of adventuring, and items culled from her domestic environment. As in a derivé, the psycho-geographic game of wandering without purpose or destination, King’s willfully marginal sets of objects are arranged in meandering sequences.

“An object is not an object; it is a witness to a relationship.” –Cecilia Vicuña

Vicki Gunter & Marguerite Elliot

Twp PRS members, Vicki and Marguerite were selected to be in the exhibition, Habitats, at the Abrams Claghorn Gallery in Albany. This is a showcase of five women artists: Laura Abrams (curator), Elizabeth Addison, Salma Arastu, Marguerite Elliot, Vicki Gunter. Each of the five artists included in this exhibition addresses the theme of habitats with a unique lens. The core is a shared and passionate interest in nature. The artworks express wonder and awe at the earth’s beauty, its precious inhabitants, and the palpable environmental threats faced by us all.

Treetops to the ocean floor- mountains to the soil beneath earth's crust- every living thing calls the earth home. Biotic and abiotic things exist together to form a habitat, where flora and fauna live side by side in a symbiotic effort to survive.

Kline Swonger

Kline Swonger's proposal and installation, Landscape Labyrinth, was selected for the Art for Planetary Health Initiative spearheaded and funded by the Fleet Science Center and Presby Foundation. This initiative was designed to support projects that engaged community members through artworks that explore ideas of planetary health and promote environmental consciousness.

Five artists were selected to represent regions throughout the greater San Diego region. Swonger was selected to represent the City of National City. The installations that resulted from this project were recently showcased at the San Diego Fleet Science Center in October.

Swonger's installation of the labyrinth is a collection of cyanotype prints of local plants on rocks created by individual community members within National City. Over the summer, six free cyanotype workshops were offered throughout National City. Cyanotypes are an eco-friendly contact print made through sunlight-sensitive chemicals, which result in a blue color around the object captured.

During these workshops, conversations were facilitated around the environmental benefits of plants and wetlands, and what we can do to support planetary health. Local plant materials were collected and prints were made on rocks by community members used to make the larger labyrinth. Participants are invited to contemplate the rich biodiversity of natural elements within our environment and reflect on what role they play in supporting planetary health as they walk through the labyrinth.
